A Journey Into Human Evolution

Olduvai Gorge or Oldupai Gorge is not primarily a wildlife destination—it is one of the world's most important archaeological landscapes. Located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the gorge preserves an extraordinary record of human evolution and the environmental history of the region. The gorge is nearly 100 metres deep and exposes layers containing fossils, stone tools and other evidence of ancient life.

Why Is Olduvai Important? For millions of years, the region experienced changing lakes, volcanic activity and evolving ecosystems. Volcanic ash repeatedly covered parts of the landscape, helping preserve archaeological and fossil evidence. The discoveries associated with Mary and Louis Leakey transformed scientific understanding of early human evolution. Important discoveries include remains associated with: Australopithecus boisei, Homo habilis, Homo erectus and Early stone tools

The Laetoli Connection: The wider Ngorongoro archaeological landscape also includes Laetoli, famous for hominin footprints dating approximately 3.6 million years. These footprints provide important evidence of early bipedal walking. Surrounding Landscape Olduvai sits within a dramatic Rift Valley environment characterized by: Volcanic formations, Dry plains, Seasonal vegetation, Eroded gorge walls, Surrounding volcanic highlands. The landscape also forms part of the broader Serengeti–Ngorongoro ecosystem.

Best Time to Visit Olduvai can be visited throughout the year. The gorge's archaeological significance does not depend on wildlife season, although dry-season travel can make road conditions easier.

Recognition: The Olduvai archaeological landscape forms part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area UNESCO World Heritage property. The NCAA also recognizes Olduvai as a major attraction within the Ngorongoro Lengai Geopark.
