The Ngorongoro Crater is the spectacular centerpiece of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is the world's largest unbroken volcanic caldera, creating a dramatic natural enclosure containing grasslands, wetlands, woodland and a remarkable concentration of wildlife.
The crater sits within a much larger conservation landscape that combines wildlife, archaeological heritage and human communities.
The crater is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, established in 1959 as a multiple-land-use conservation area where wildlife conservation exists alongside traditional pastoralism.
The wider area also contains an extraordinary archaeological record extending over millions of years.
UNESCO Recognition:
Ngorongoro Conservation Area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979 for its natural values and received cultural recognition in 2010. It is therefore a mixed natural and cultural World Heritage property.

The Crater Landscape
The crater floor contains several distinct habitats:
Open grasslands
Lake Magadi
Wetlands
Acacia woodland
Marshes
Forested crater walls
The surrounding highlands create a dramatic contrast between the cool, misty crater rim and the warmer grasslands below.
Best Time to Visit
June–October: Excellent wildlife viewing and generally dry conditions.
January–February: Particularly interesting around the wider Ngorongoro/Serengeti ecosystem because of seasonal wildlife movements and calving.
March–May: Green landscapes and fewer visitors, but heavier rains can affect conditions.
